I started making this recipe because I was desperate to enjoy caramel lattes without all of the extra, unnecessary ingredients.
Typical caramel sauce ingredient lists include the following: Corn syrup, invert cane sugar, water, cane sugar, skim milk, heavy cream, sweetened condensed skim milk (skim milk, sugar), salt, natural flavor, sodium citrate, pectin.
My recipe contains: Pure maple syrup, butter and heavy cream.
With only THREE real food ingredients, this is a caramel sauce I can enjoy and feel good about drinking in my coffee!
This sauce also makes a great topping for homemade ice cream!!

I LOVE this recipe! I get to enjoy one of my favorite treats (almost every morning) without all of the refined sugar and extra ingredients!

Over medium/high heat bring the syrup to 220 degrees, using a candy thermometer. It usually takes me about 20 minutes to reach this temperature
Once it reaches the 220 degrees, remove from heat and add room temperature butter
After the butter is dissolved, add the heavy cream
Let the caramel cool and then refrigerate to store
Enjoy!
Be sure to continually stir the syrup as it's heating up. I don't stop stirring the entire 20 minutes!
